Pastor Walter Henry
SENIOR PASTOR
The Reverend Walter Henry was born in Havre de Grace, Maryland, January 19, 1973. He is a lifelong AME having been baptized at the age of six weeks at St. James AME Church, Havre de Grace, Maryland and receiving the Lord Jesus as his savior at the age of nine in 1983 on January 9, 1983. He is the only child of Caledonia Henry, also a lifelong AME and native of Ocala, Florida.
He was first called upon to deliver God’s word at the age of 12 under the pastorate of the Reverend Dr. Michael O. Thomas. Since that time, he has been ardent in his striving to serve the Lord with gladness in anyway God would use him serving as president of his local Young People’s Department, president of the Junior Usher Board, singing in three choirs as well as being appointed a junior steward.
The Reverend Henry officially began his ministry at the age of 18 on December 22, 1991 under the tutelage the Reverend Franklin J. West, Sr., then pastor of his home church, St. James AME Church, Havre de Grace, Maryland. He was licensed to preach by Presiding Elder Edward C. Wilson in May 1992 and admitted to the Baltimore Annual Conference under the leadership of the late Bishop Hamel Hartford Brookins in April 1993. In 1996 he was ordained an Itinerant Deacon by Bishop Fredrick Calhoun James and in 1998 he was elected and ordained an Itinerant Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church during the 182nd Session of the Baltimore Annual Conference under the leadership of the late Bishop Vinton Randolph Anderson. Following his ordination, he served as a ministerial assistant to the Pastor at Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church under the leadership of the Reverend Dr. (now Bishop) Jeffrey Nathaniel Leath, I, from 1998 to 2000.
In 2000 Bishop Anderson appointed him to his first pastoral charge, Wrights AME Church, Elkton, MD at the 184th Session of the Baltimore Annual Conference and since that time he has served four other churches, Providence AME, Memphis, TN (2006-2010); Mt. Sinai AME, Arlington, TN (2010-2011); and Mt. Herman AME Church, Dixonville, TN (2011-2016). At the Mid-Year Conference of the 13th Episcopal District in 2016 he was appointed to serve his current charge, the flagship of the North Memphis District, St. James AME Church Memphis.
The Reverend Dr. Henry has served on the West Tennessee Conference Board of Examiners since 2007, first as Secretary/Registrar (2007-2013) then the Dean of the of Ministerial Training Board (2013-2020) and now he serves as the Char of the West Tennessee Conference Board of Ministerial Examiners. Along with this he is the Treasurer of the West Tennessee Conference and a serves on the West Tennessee Conference Board of Trustees.
He is a 1995 graduate of Morehouse College with a Bachelor of Arts in History, a 1998 graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity, and he completed the Doctor of Ministry in May of 2021 at Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He is also Master Mason and a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
